The Urdu Ghazal module explores the evolution, structure, themes, and aesthetics of one of the most celebrated poetic forms in Urdu literature. Beginning with its origins in Persian poetry, the course traces the ghazal’s development through classical masters such as Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, and Allama Iqbal, to its transformation in modern and contemporary contexts. Students will study the formal features of the ghazal—its meter, rhyme, and refrain (qaafiya and radif)—and examine how poets use this form to express themes of love, loss, mysticism, and social reflection.
Through close readings and discussion, the module encourages appreciation of linguistic artistry and cultural significance. It also introduces critical frameworks for understanding the ghazal’s role in shaping Urdu identity, aesthetics, and global literary dialogue. By the end of the course, students will have developed both analytical and interpretive skills to engage deeply with this poetic tradition.
