Literary Theory and Forms of Literature (Hindi)

This module will aim at promoting the understanding of literature in its psychological, artistic, social and historical contexts, understanding principles of Indian literary theory. Students will be acquainted with the definition of Literature, scope of literature, language of literary criticism and various literary genres.
Broad features drawn from Western Literary theories (Plato’s Literary Theory, Aristotle’s Catharsis, Croce’s Expressionism, Longinus’s Sublime theory, T. S Elliot’s theory of impersonalisation) that bear a relation to Indian Literary Criticism will also be studied.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate an understanding of the evolution of literary theories in Hindi
- Discuss major literary theories including inter alia, Ras Siddhant, Kavya Goun, Alankaar, Chand Shastra, Shabda Shakti
- Examine characteristics of various genres and forms of literature
- Apply literary theories in the understanding of thematic, structural and stylistic traits of literary texts

Course description: This module aims at introducing Tamil prose such as short story, novel and drama in relation to form, content, techniques, themes like social justice, feminism, realism and social reforms in Tamil Nadu. An in - depth study of an author’s creative writings based on historical, cultural and social contexts focusing on works in Tamil starting from the 19th century to date will form part of the module. An in-depth study of selected texts with focus on techniques, style, themes related to various socio-political movements in Tamil Nadu during the pre- independence and post -independence periods will be part of the module for the short story.

The focus of the module will be on the various theories and techniques of translation. It will enable the students to be acquainted with the different forms of translation in Telugu literature from the early period. It will also help them to know the different types of translation and their translators. In addition, the importance of borrowing vocabulary from other languages will also be considered.
